Chocolate Peanut Bars

Kids Cooking

Peanuts, dating back to around 800 B.C., were important in the diet of Native Indians in South America and Mexico.  Peanuts start growing as a flower but because of its heavy weight after pollination, it bends towards the ground and eventually goes underground where it matures.  For an after school snack or a lunch box treat,  prepare bars by combining two types of baking chips, raisins, peanuts and bake in a graham cracker crust.

Preparation time:  About 15 minutes.

Equipment you’ll need:  Can opener, solid (nested) measuring cups, wooden spoon, utility spoon, 11 x 7 x 2-inch baking pan, cooling rack, table knife, and serving spatula.

Safety:   Use dry potholders to place baking pan into the oven and remove.  Ask an adult to chop the peanuts.

Recipe:

1/4  cup melted unsalted butter

1     cup graham cracker crumbs, about 15 graham cracker squares

1     cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1     cup peanut butter chips

1     14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk

1/2  cup unsalted peanuts, chopped

1/2  cup golden raisins

1.  Preheat oven to 350-degrees.

2.  Pour melted butter over bottom of baking pan.  Sprinkle with graham cracker

and press evenly over bottom of pan.

3.  Sprinkle crumbs layer with chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, raisins, and

     peanuts.

4.  Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over.

5.  Bake 20-25 minutes or until set.

6.  Place pan on rack to cool and then cut into bars.

      Yield:  About 12 bars

Clean up:  Soak baking pan in hot soapy water for easier clean up.  Have fun in the kitchen, but always clean up.
