French Toast

Kids Cooking

To start off Mom’s day, prepare her a delicious breakfast of French toast and juice.  Set up a breakfast tray with a vase of fresh flowers and attach a personal note or poem.   Years ago in England, a rich fruit-filled  mothering cake” was prepared to honor mothers.  In Scotland, children fried pancakes called “carlings.”

Preparation time:  About 15 minutes.

Equipment you’ll need: Non-stick griddle or skillet, shallow baking dish, liquid measuring cup, measuring spoons, tongs and turner.

Safety:  Let the griddle/skillet cool before washing.  Keep eggs and milk cold until use.  Never use a cracked egg for danger of salmonella food poisoning.

Recipe:

6     slices whole grain bread

2     large eggs

3/4  cup milk

1     teaspoon granulated sugar

1/2  teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1.  Crack eggs into a bowl.

2.  Add milk, vanilla, and sugar

3.  With a wire whisk, mix ingredients together.

4.  Dip bread into egg mixture so both sides of bread are covered.

5.  Lightly spray griddle/skillet with cooking oil and pre-heat for a few seconds on medium temperature.

6.  Using tongs, place bread onto griddle/skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides.

7.  Put  2 pieces of French toast on a serving plate.  Top with butter, margarine, fresh fruit, syrup, or

     confectioners’ sugar.

     Yield:  3 servings.

Clean up:  Put away all supplies. Make sure stove control is turned off.  Wipe off cook top after is has cooled. Leave the kitchen spotless!
