Lovable
Valentine’s Day is
a special day observed on February 14th. Some people send greeting cards that are
called valentines to their friends and members of their families. Commercial valentines were first made in
the early l800’s. Design your own valentines and write a special message or
poem inside. On Valentine’s Day, give
your family a personalized card and a plate of cookies. Lovable cookies are two cookies baked
separately and sandwiched together with frosting. Cookies roll and cut better if dough, board,
pin and cutters are chilled first.
Preparation
time: About 15 minutes
Equipment you’ll
need: Rolling pin, rolling board, 2
sizes “heart” cookie cutters, non-stick cookie sheet, spatula, sifter, cooling
rack and turner.
Safety: Ask an adult to cut open the cookie dough
package and divide dough in half. Use dry potholders to put cookie sheet into
oven and remove.
Recipe:
1 18-ounce roll refrigerated sugar cookie
dough
1 12-ounce can whipped strawberry frosting
Red sugar crystals
Confectioners’ sugar
1. Preheat oven to 350-degrees.
2. Divide dough into two sections and let soften
slightly.
3. Roll dough out on lightly floured board and
use “heart” cutters.
5. Use a smaller cookie cutter to cut out a
heart in the center of half the cookies.
6. Place on a cookie sheet and bake at
350-degrees for 7 to 9 minutes.
You can bake the baby hearts, too, for 3
to 4 minutes only.
7. Remove cookies from sheet and place on
cooling rack.
8. Spread each solid cookie with frosting and
top with a cutout cookie.
9. Sprinkle with red sugar crystals or sifted
confectioners’ sugar
Yield:
1 dozen cookies.
Clean up: Carefully clean counters because extra dough
and frosting make counters sticky. Be
proud of your clean kitchen!
