M&M’s Cookie Mix

Kids Cooking

Prepare a gift from your kitchen, homemade with love.  To prepare cookie mix, layer a 1 quart canning jar with flour mixture and miniature mini baking bits.  Butter/margarine, egg, milk and vanilla will be needed to finish the preparation.  Cover lid with a pinked circle of Christmas fabric and screw of band tightly.  Provide directions on a gift or 3 x 5 note card.  Punch a hole in the corner and tie on with raffia or Christmas ribbon.  Place filled jar in a small gift bag stuffed with colorful tissue.  Prepare several gift mixes for family or friends.

Preparation time:   About 15 minutes.

Equipment you’ll need:  Wide mouth quart canning jar, funnel, sifter, large mixing

bowl, measuring spoons, solid (nested) measuring cups, mixing spoon, cookie sheet and cooling rack.

Safety:  Ask an adult to sterilize the jar.  It should be cool and totally dry before filling with cookie mix.

Recipe:

1      cup granulated sugar

1      teaspoon baking powder

½     teaspoon baking soda

2      cups all-purpose flour

1      cup semi-sweet chocolate M&M’s mini baking bits

        Parchment paper

1.     In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and sugar.

2.     Spoon dry ingredients into jar.  Tap on counter to settle.

3.     Spoon M&M’s gently into jar.

4.     Cover lid with a circle of Christmas fabric and screw on band tightly.

5.     Prepare gift card.

Attach instructions:  Preheat oven to 350-degrees.  Prepare cookie sheet with parchment paper.  In a large mixing bowl, stir together 1 stick softened butter/margarine, 1 large egg, ¼ cup milk and 2 teaspoons vanilla.  Stir in cookie mix and blend.   Shape cookie dough into balls and place 2-inches apart.   Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until edges are lightly browned.

Yield:  2 dozen.

Clean up:  Put away all supplies.  Wipe off counters to remove any flour mixture dust.  Parents appreciate a very clean kitchen.
